"Watch Your Words: Why Every Word You Speak Will Be Judged on the Day of Judgment"

Updated: May 3, 2023

We have been given the gift of speech to communicate with one another. However, with this gift also comes great responsibility. Scripture teaches us that we will be judged for every word we speak. Jesus himself says in Matthew 12:36-37, "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

What does it mean to have to give an account for every idle word we speak? The word "idle" here means "useless" or "unproductive." It refers to words that are spoken without any real thought or intention behind them. An

example of this could be gossip or spreading rumors about someone. We may not realize the harm we are causing with our words, but God sees it all.

It is also important to note that our words reveal the condition of our hearts. In Luke 6:45, Jesus says, "The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks." We can discern someone's motives and intentions by listening to their words. This is why it is crucial that we guard our hearts and minds and speak words that are pleasing to God.

However, it is not just our own words that we will be judged for. As we interact with others, we must also be aware of the impact our words can have on them. In Romans 14:13, Paul urges us not to "put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister." This means that we must be mindful of our words and actions so that we do not cause others to stumble in their faith.

As followers of Christ, we must be aware of the power of our words and the responsibility that comes with them. We will be judged for every word we speak, so we must use our words wisely and with intention. We must also be mindful of the impact our words can have on others and seek to build them up rather than tear them down. Let us always strive to speak words that are pleasing to God and edify those around us.
