"The Ultimate Quest: Uncovering the Supernatural Power of Wisdom in Job 28"

Updated: May 3, 2023

Job 28 is a beautiful chapter in the Bible that describes the search for wisdom and understanding as an even greater quest than searching for precious gems. The chapter begins with a poetic description of the depths of the earth, where men mine for gold, silver, and precious stones. But then the focus shifts to the search for wisdom, which is described as even more precious than these treasures.

The price of wisdom is high, and it cannot be bought with money. Job 28:12-13 says, "But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living." Wisdom is not something that can be obtained through material possessions or earthly wealth. It is something that comes from a deeper-supernatural source.

So, where does wisdom come from? Job 28:28 says, "And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’" Wisdom comes from a relationship with God, from recognizing and revering His sovereignty, and from living a life that is pleasing to Him.

The deeper revelation in Job 28 is that wisdom is not just a set of intellectual skills or knowledge, but it is a way of life. It is a moral and spiritual excellence that comes from living in a right relationship with God. The search for wisdom is not just about acquiring knowledge, but it is about living a life that is pleasing to God and honoring to His wisdom.

There are several examples in the Bible where wisdom is described as supernatural. For instance, in 1 Kings 3:16-28, King Solomon is asked to settle a dispute between two women who claimed to be the mother of the same baby. Instead of making a rash judgment, Solomon prayed for wisdom and discernment, and was given supernatural insight to solve the problem. His wisdom was so extraordinary that it caused all of Israel to marvel.

Another example is found in the book of Proverbs, which is full of wise sayings and teachings. Proverbs 2:6 says, "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." This verse suggests that wisdom comes directly from God, and is not something that can be obtained through human effort or intelligence alone.

Furthermore, James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." This verse encourages believers to seek wisdom through prayer and trust in God, suggesting that wisdom is a gift that comes from above.

The pursuit of wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. It is conditional, and we must recognize our dependence on God and submit to His will in order to receive true wisdom. Job 28 emphasizes the supernatural nature of wisdom, and it is clear that true wisdom cannot be obtained through human effort or earthly wealth, but comes from a deeper source - a right relationship with a supernatural God.

Before we can receive wisdom, we must recognize our own limitations and our need for God's guidance. Proverbs 1:7 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction." This verse emphasizes the importance of recognizing God's sovereignty and submitting to His will before we can truly understand the world around us.

Furthermore, James 3:17 says, "But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere." The pursuit of wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and recognizing our dependence on Him. True wisdom is a supernatural gift that cannot be obtained through human effort or earthly wealth. We must submit to God's will and live a life that reflects His moral and spiritual excellence in order to receive it. Job 28 emphasizes the importance of recognizing the divine source of wisdom and seeking it through a relationship with God.

PRAYER FOR WISDOM:

"Father in heaven, I come before You seeking wisdom and understanding, as Your Word instructs us to do. Your Word says that if any of us lacks wisdom, we should ask of You, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to us (James 1:5).

I recognize my dependence on You and my need for Your guidance in all areas of my life. I ask that You would grant me the wisdom and understanding I need to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie before me. Help me to discern the right path to take, and to make decisions that honor You and reflect Your will.

I also ask for a spirit of humility and teachability, that I may be receptive to Your guidance and open to learning from others. May Your Holy Spirit guide me into all truth and lead me into a deeper relationship with You.

Thank You for Your promise that if we seek wisdom and understanding, we will find it (Proverbs 2:6-7). I trust in Your faithfulness and goodness, and I pray that You would grant me the wisdom and understanding I need to live a life that honors and pleases You. In Jesus' name, Amen."
