"The Prodigals: Celebrities Who Walked Away from Christ, But Found Their Way Back"

Updated: May 3, 2023

There have been many cases of entertainers who started out as Christians but later became entangled in the culture that goes against the principles of Christianity. Some of these entertainers include:

  1. Katy Perry - Born Katheryn Hudson, Perry began her music career as a Christian artist, releasing her first album under the name Katy Hudson. However, she later shifted towards secular music and became a pop superstar.

  2. Justin Bieber - Bieber was raised in a Christian household and initially gained fame through his YouTube videos covering Christian songs. However, as he became more successful in the mainstream music industry, his behavior and choices began to stray from his faith.

  3. Miley Cyrus - Cyrus grew up in a Christian household and was a Disney Channel star before becoming a pop sensation. However, she began to shed her wholesome image and embrace a more rebellious and controversial persona in recent years.

  4. Brittany Spears - Raised in the Southern Baptist tradition, Spears rose to fame as a pop star in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, her personal life became plagued by scandal and controversy, and she has struggled with mental health and substance abuse issues.

  5. Kanye West - West was raised in a Christian household and has been open about his faith throughout his music career. However, he has also faced criticism and controversy for some of his choices and statements.

It is important to remember that these entertainers are human and are prone to making mistakes and straying from their faith as we all capable of doing. However, it is also a reminder that fame and success can sometimes lead people away from the values and principles they were raised with. As Christians, it is important to pray for these individuals and to be discerning about the messages and influences we allow into our lives.

Some celebrities who have walked away from their Christian faith have later returned to it.

For example, Brian "Head" Welch, the former guitarist of the band Korn, left the band and turned to Christianity. He later returned to Korn and reconciled his faith with his music career.

Similarly, Kevin Max, formerly a member of the Christian band dc Talk, left the band and pursued a solo career. He struggled with substance abuse and other personal issues before returning to his faith and rejoining the band for a reunion tour.

It's important to remember that everyone's journey with faith is unique, and we should not judge others for their struggles or decisions. As Christians, we are called to love and pray for those who may be struggling in their faith, and to offer support and encouragement when possible.

Here are a few more examples of celebrities who walked away from Christianity but later returned:

Denise Matthews: Formerly known as Vanity, Denise Matthews was a singer and actress who rose to fame in the 1980s. She walked away from her Christian faith and battled drug addiction and other personal struggles for many years. In 1992, she had a near-death experience and subsequently returned to Christianity. She later became an evangelist and spoke publicly about her faith.

Jeff Fenholt: Jeff Fenholt was a rock singer who starred as Jesus in the original Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar. He later became a born-again Christian and began performing Christian music. However, he struggled with substance abuse and other personal issues and walked away from his faith. In 1989, he had a spiritual awakening and returned to Christianity.

Montell Jordan: Montell Jordan is a singer and songwriter who had a string of hits in the 1990s. He was raised in a Christian household and began his music career as a gospel singer. However, he later transitioned to R&B music and walked away from his faith. In 2010, he returned to Christianity and became a worship leader at a church in Atlanta. Alice Cooper is another example of an entertainer who returned to Christianity. In the 1970s, Cooper was known for his shock rock performances and often controversial lyrics. However, after struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction, Cooper became a born-again Christian in the 1980s. He has since credited his faith with helping him overcome his addictions and turn his life around.

Cooper continues to perform, but now incorporates his faith into his music and speaks openly about his beliefs in interviews. Justin Bieber and Kanye West are also examples of entertainers who have had public conversions to Christianity in recent years. Bieber has spoken openly about his faith and how it has helped him through personal struggles, including mental health issues and substance abuse. He has also released Christian-themed music and has been seen attending church regularly. Similarly, Kanye West has been vocal about his Christian faith and even released a gospel-themed album called "Jesus is King" in 2019.

Both Bieber and West have faced criticism and skepticism from fans and critics about the sincerity of their conversion, but they have continued to incorporate their faith into their personal and professional lives.

Anyone can turn away from Christ and then return to Him again. The Bible teaches that God is always ready to forgive those who repent and turn back to Him. As Christians, we are called to resist evil and stand firm in our faith, but we are also called to love and pray for those who have turned away from God.

One important passage that speaks to this idea is Ephesians 6:12, which says, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." EMPHASIS, please!

Another relevant passage is 1 Peter 5:8-9, which says, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings."

In terms of forgiveness and redemption, 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." And in Luke 15:10, Jesus teaches that there is rejoicing in heaven over even one sinner who repents.

Ultimately, as Christians, we are called to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44), knowing that our ultimate victory is in Christ (Romans 8:37-39).
