The Powerful Prescription for Health Hidden in Proverbs 3:7-8

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." ~Proverbs 3:7-8

"Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." ~Proverbs 3:7-8

At first glance, this scripture may seem straightforward. I almost dismissed it, thinking its meaning was too simple to dive deeper into. But then, I realized that this very simplicity is where we often stumble.

Living in the Bible Belt has been a blessing, but it’s easy for the richness of scripture to become routine, losing its transformative power in our lives. We can unintentionally treat God’s Word with less reverence than He intends.

Let’s dig deeper into this verse. Notice that it’s conditional. The promise is that health will come to your body and nourishment to your bones.

Are you in need of health?
Do you struggle with disease (dis-ease) in your bones?

This promise is like a prescription from the Great Physician Himself. So, what conditions must be met to receive this health and nourishment?

The Holy Spirit points out three key actions:

1) Do not be wise in your own eyes,

2) Fear the Lord, and

3) Shun evil.

"Not being wise in one’s own eyes" is more than just a phrase; it’s a spiritual principle. It highlights the limitations of human understanding and the necessity of being humble.

Our perspectives are shaped by our unique experiences, biases, and limitations. When we’re "wise in our own eyes," we build barriers to growth, learning, and the pursuit of truth.

Humility, on the other hand, is the cornerstone of wisdom. It invites us on a lifelong journey of exploration, questioning, and learning. By letting go of the illusion of self-sufficiency, we open ourselves to the wisdom of others and the teachings and mysteries of God!

Now, let’s consider what it means to "fear the Lord." In today’s culture, this phrase is often misunderstood. It might evoke images of terror or dread, but its biblical meaning is far more profound.

At its core, "fear of the Lord" is a deep reverence and awe for God as the ultimate source of creation, power, and holiness. It’s not about cowering in fear, but rather recognizing our smallness in comparison to God.

Finally, we are called to "shun evil." This is more than simply avoiding wrongdoing; it’s an active stance against moral corruption. It implies a deep-seated hate for sin and a firm commitment to live in alignment with goodness, purity and holiness.

In today’s society, shunning evil takes discernment and courage. We should be critically evaluating media content and avoiding what promotes violence, immorality, or harmful ideologies. We need to make conscious choices about the products and services we support, considering their ethical implications.

We need to be in the habit of upholding high moral standards in our personal lives, even when faced with peer pressure or temptation.

Shunning evil is challenging, but essential for creating a just and compassionate society. It requires a commitment to living according to Godly values, even when it’s unpopular or inconvenient.

We cannot let scripture become so familiar that we overlook its depth. This seemingly simple teaching is profound. God’s promise is immense—after all, what do we have if not our health?

What steps can you take to receive health and nourished bones from God?

When I study scripture, I also reflect on the opposite of what the Holy Spirit is teaching me. In this case, it would be:

View yourself as all-knowing, believing you need no help; disregard and dishonor God, and pursue all forms of evil. If you choose this path, you'll encounter disease, sickness, declining health, and a weakened spirit. Your bones will lack the nourishment they need.

I don’t like those conditions. Do you?

The good news is, you and I have the freedom to choose—either to meet those conditions or to ignore them. Now that we are aware of them, we can’t claim ignorance anymore; We are responsible for the outcome. I can choose to obey the Word and follow it, or I can choose rebellion and take my chances with whatever comes next. Maybe, as long as no one tells you how to live, that’s what you prefer. God respects our choices, your choices. He’s never forced anyone to obey, love, or even like Him.

I don’t know your situation personally, but if you’re facing these challenges, can you truly say that you’re aligned with God’s word to receive the health and nourishment you desire? Do you recognize that you might have fallen short of the conditions necessary to restore your health? Have the doctors done all they can? Are you at the maximum dosage of your prescriptions? What harm could there be in trying God’s way?

If all it takes is humility, acknowledging God’s authority and wisdom, giving Him the respect He deserves, and turning away from evil, are you going to give excuses or try Gods ways?

Shunning evil has become a diluted concept, largely due to the Entertainment Industry normalizing and glorifying it. What once horrified us, we now pay to watch.

But what is evil? What defines good and bad? The answer is found in the word of God. You and I do not define what is "good" or "bad". God does.

The "fruits of darkness" in the Bible refer to sinful behaviors and actions that are opposed to the "fruit of the Spirit" and the principles of righteousness. These behaviors are often associated with living in a way that is contrary to God's will and are described as works of the flesh, evil deeds, or actions rooted in moral and spiritual corruption.

Key passages that describe these "fruits of darkness" include:

Galatians 5:19-21"The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Romans 13:12-13"The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy."

Colossians 3:5-9"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips."

In a world where self-reliance and pride are often celebrated, this verse serves as a powerful reminder of the true source of wisdom and well-being. By humbling ourselves, revering God, and actively turning away from evil, we align our lives with His divine plan causing Him to come to our aid for all our needs. This alignment not only nourishes our spirit but also brings healing and vitality to our physical bodies. Embracing these principles leads to a life marked by health, wholeness, and the deep, sustaining nourishment that only God can provide.

The first step is to know Jesus. The second is to study His Word so you understand how it all works. As you gain insight, you start making the necessary changes and stand firm on His promises. Will it always be easy? No, but it will always be worth it!

Faith is the only Fight you will be asked to participate in! The rest is all Gods battle!

A prayer for you!
A prayer for you!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, In Jesus name, I thank you for this platform to speak into people's lives. I lift up the person reading this article about Proverbs 3:7-8 and I ask You, Father, to open their eyes and grant them understanding of what it means to be wise in our own eyes versus walking in humility.

Throughout their day, show them clear examples that deepen their understanding of Your wisdom and truth. Reveal to them what it looks like to truly honor and respect You and remind them of the consequences faced by those who choose to mock and disregard Your word, creating a profound understanding in their heart.

Father, I ask for Your help in guiding them away from what You deem as evil. Give them the strength to make necessary changes, and assure them that even in their struggles, You are there, believing in them and supporting them. Guide them to Your Word and give them a passion to absorb Your word and see their true selves through Your eyes. Your mercy is new every day, and we should never take that for granted. But Your mercy is also an expression of Your love, and Your word is given to protect each one of us from judgment and wrath and everything the devil would like to use against us and our families.

May the Holy Spirit guide and comfort them as they go forward on this journey of transformation. How exciting it is to know that with each step they take in obeying the Word, they move further away from disease, sickness, and infirmity, and closer to the wealth of health. Let them feel Your presence with every decision they make, knowing that You are right there, cheering them on. Amen.

Our spiritual health directly impacts our physical well-being and overall quality of life.
