"The Power of Words: Why Ecclesiastes 10:20 Warns Us to Watch What We Say"

Updated: May 3, 2023

Ecclesiastes 10:20 in the King James Version says, "Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter."

This verse speaks to the importance of being mindful of what we say, even in our thoughts and private conversations. The advice is specifically to not speak negatively or curse those in positions of power or authority, as it may come back to harm us.

An example of this could be in the workplace. If a coworker is frustrated with their boss and begins to speak negatively about them to other coworkers, those words could eventually get back to the boss and harm the relationship between the two. Even if the words were not meant to cause harm, they can still have negative consequences.

The lesson from Ecclesiastes 10:20 is that we should be careful with our words, even in private conversations and thoughts. The words we speak have power and can come back to affect us in ways we may not expect.

Additionally, this verse also highlights the importance of respecting those in positions of authority, whether it be a political leader, a boss, or any other figure with power. As Christians, we are called to submit to those in authority over us, as stated in Romans 13:1, "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." This does not mean blind obedience or condoning wrongdoing, but it does mean speaking and acting respectfully towards those in positions of authority.

Ecclesiastes 10:20 reminds us to be mindful of our words and thoughts, especially when it comes to those in positions of power or authority. Let us speak and act with wisdom and respect, recognizing the power and impact our words can have.
