Reading the Signs of Body Language: Understanding Non-Verbal Cues Through a Biblical Lens
A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
Proverbs 6:12-15
Proverbs 6:12-15 offers a detailed look into the nature of a person with wicked intentions, describing how deceit can manifest not just in words, but through body language and subtle actions. The term “froward (or perverse) mouth” refers to someone who uses twisted or dishonest words, filled with lies and manipulation. This echoes Proverbs 4:24, where we are urged to avoid deceitful speech. The mouth, as Jesus explains in Luke 6:45, reflects the heart, so a perverse mouth reveals a heart steeped in unrighteousness.
The phrase “he winks with his eyes” suggests secretive, sly intentions. In this context, winking isn’t a playful gesture but a subtle sign of hidden deceit. Proverbs 10:10 warns that such behavior causes trouble.
The eyes, often described as windows to the soul, can reveal much about someone’s true motives, even when their words might not.
Likewise, “speaking with the feet” refers to how a person’s actions reveal their character. The way they move, where they go, and how quickly they rush into trouble all speak volumes about their intentions. Proverbs 1:16 supports this, saying, "For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood." This shows how our feet can symbolize the paths we choose, whether they lead to good or evil.
Actions often betray the true state of a person’s heart, regardless of what their words might suggest.
The idea of "teaching with fingers" implies using hand gestures or movements to subtly influence or manipulate. This form of non-verbal communication may reveal someone’s efforts to control or deceive others without saying a word. It speaks to the power of body language and the way evil can express itself through even the smallest gestures.
Together, these verses give us a deeper insight into how body language can reveal someone’s true intentions. God urges us to be discerning, to look beyond words and observe a person’s actions and mannerisms. As Proverbs 16:30 notes, “He who winks his eyes is plotting perversity; he who purses his lips is bent on evil,” reinforcing the importance of observing these subtle signs.
Similarly, in Matthew 7:16, we are reminded, “You will know them by their fruits,” meaning that a person’s actions, or "fruits," often reveal their true nature, regardless of what they say.
Proverbs 6 teaches us that wickedness often shows itself in the way a person moves, gestures, and behaves, even when their words try to conceal it.
When you meet someone and your gut is signaling you to leave, find an exit, or remain silent, even though you can't fully understand why, remember this: your brain is processing the words being spoken, but your discernment is picking up on much more than what’s being said. As believers, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, guiding us in ways that go beyond mere logic or verbal cues. Often, it’s the non-verbal communication—body language, tone, or even a spiritual atmosphere—that raises red flags. Discernment is one of the most powerful tools the Holy Spirit gives us, allowing us to perceive things that aren't immediately obvious.
When you feel that internal nudge or sense of caution, it’s vital to trust that the Holy Spirit is at work, alerting you to something your natural senses might overlook. Proverbs 6:12-15 talks about the subtlety of a wicked person—how they wink with their eyes, speak with their feet, and teach with their fingers. These are all non-verbal signs that something deceptive may be happening. Even if everything seems fine on the surface, your spirit may detect that something isn't right. That gut feeling, or intuition, is often a divine warning.
For believers, this discernment is a gift, and it’s essential to listen to it. The Holy Spirit may be protecting you from harm, helping you avoid making a poor decision, or steering you toward truth. So, when you can’t quite explain why you feel uneasy, trust your spirit. It's not about paranoia or fear; it's about recognizing that God speaks to us in ways that often transcend words.
