"Love is a Daily Choice: Overcoming Anger with Biblical Principles"
Updated: May 3, 2023
Jesus taught that love is not just an emotion, but a choice and an action. We are called to love one another, even when it's difficult, and especially when anger is in the way.
One example of this is found in Matthew 5:43-44, where Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This is not an easy thing to do, but it's what we are called to as Christians.
When we feel anger or bitterness towards someone, it's important to remember that we are all human and all fall short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). We can ask God to help us see the person as He sees them, with compassion and love.
We can also choose to pray for the person, even if we don't feel like it. James 5:16 says, "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." Prayer can soften our hearts and change our perspective.
Another way to put on love is by serving others. Galatians 5:13 says, "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." When we serve others, we are putting their needs above our own, and this is an act of love.
Finally, it's important to remember that we are not perfect and will make mistakes. Colossians 3:13 says, "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." We can choose to forgive others, just as God has forgiven us.
So let us choose to put on love each day, even when it's hard, knowing that this is what God calls us to do.
