How to Shut Hell Down: The Power of “It Is Written”-How Jesus Trains Us to Fight Devils & Darkness

Matthew 4 isn’t just a story of temptation—it’s a masterclass in spiritual warfare. Three times, Satan begins with “If…”—a slithering seed of doubt wrapped in religious-sounding bait. It wasn’t just about hunger, pride, or power. It was an attempt to fracture the identity of Jesus. "If You are the Son of God..." he hisses—hoping Jesus would question the very truth He came to fulfill.
And yet—Jesus never argued. He never negotiated. He never entertained it. He just said, “It is written.”
Three words. Zero compromise. Victory by Word, not by willpower.
Why? Because Jesus is the Word (John 1:1). He wasn’t just quoting Scripture—He was Scripture in flesh, wielding the sword of truth with deadly accuracy (Hebrews 4:12). Satan tried to twist the Word to trap the Word. But he forgot: the Word knows the Word better than the deceiver ever could.

Now let’s bring it home—you and I are not Jesus. We’re not the Word made flesh. But we have the Word. We’ve been given the same sword. We just need to know how to swing it.
“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” — Psalm 119:11
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night… then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” — Joshua 1:8
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16
But here’s the hard truth—if you’re not in the Word, the Word won’t be in you. So when the enemy shows up, you won’t have a sword—just silence.
And silence won’t cast out devils and disease.
Too many Christians are relying on secondhand faith—sermons, podcasts, devotionals. But the Word is not just a Sunday snack. It’s a daily weapon. A lamp. A lifeline. A mirror. A map. A shield. A fire. A hammer. A sword. And guess what? Your preacher might not answer your midnight text. But the Word of God is open 24/7. It doesn’t sleep. Doesn’t call in sick. Doesn’t get canceled.
“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” — Isaiah 40:8

So next time the enemy whispers “If…”—You respond with “It is written. ”But don’t wait until you’re under attack to start studying. Train now so you’re not scrambling later. Because the tempter is relentless. But so is the truth—if it's inside you.
Want to be unshakable? Get grounded. Get armored. Get in the Word.
See, Satan’s tactics haven’t changed. He’s not just bold and brazen—he’s subtle and surgical. He doesn’t always show up in a red cape waving a pitchfork. No, more often he comes as a thought, a feeling, a nagging question dressed in concern:
“If you’re really a child of God… why is this happening to you?”“
Why did the prayer go unanswered?”
“Why are you still battling sickness?”
“Why are your finances still tight?”
“Why does it feel like you’re alone?”

Sound familiar? That whisper—that seed of suspicion—isn't just aimed at your situation. It's aimed at your identity. Just like he said to Jesus, “If you are…”, he now says to you:
“If you were really loved…”
“If He really cared…”
“If His Word was true…”
It’s poison wrapped in pity.
Doubt dressed in disguise.
And it's effective—unless you're anchored in the truth.
And make no mistake—Satan doesn’t need to pull you into full-blown rebellion. He just needs you to flinch. To second-guess. To scroll social media and see pain everywhere, and think:
“Maybe this God thing doesn’t work.”
He'll point to failed marriages, moral failures in churches, cancer diagnoses, economic crashes, injustice, betrayal, heartbreak.“Look,” he says. “Where’s your God now?”
And if your faith is only rooted in feeling,
you’ll fall for the lie.
But truth? Truth stands when emotions collapse. Truth remains when culture crumbles. Truth whispers back: “It is written.”
“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind.” — Numbers 23:19
“Let God be true and every man a liar.” — Romans 3:4
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” — Matthew 24:35
The Word of God isn’t shaken by the news. It isn’t undone by corrupt politicians or broken churches. It isn’t proven false by cancer, death, or bankruptcy. It stands because He stands.

So when the whisper comes—and it will—you respond like your Savior did. Not with emotion. Not with debate. With the Word. The WORD is YOUR SWORD!
“It is written: ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” (Hebrews 13:5)
“It is written: ‘No weapon formed against me shall prosper.’” (Isaiah 54:17)
“It is written: ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’” (John 16:33)
"It is written: “But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds.” Isaiah 53:5 (CSB)
When Satan Can’t Get to You—He’ll Use Those Around You
Don’t let whispers rewrite what God already spoke. When Satan says, “If…” — you answer with “It is.”It is written. It is finished. And I am His.
But don’t stop there—because the enemy doesn’t just whisper in your mind. He speaks through people. Yes, even the ones closest to you.
Satan didn’t show up in a pitch-black cave to tempt Jesus. He came right after a public baptism, in the middle of a fast, in a lonely place. And he won’t hesitate to use your moments of weakness, your emotional cracks, or your relationships to plant the same poisonous seeds of doubt.
He’ll speak through a worried parent or spouse:
“Are you sure God will heal you? Maybe you should just accept it.”
Through a bitter sibling:
“You’re always so spiritual—what has that gotten you?”
Through a fearful friend:
“I think you need to be more realistic. Don’t get your hopes up.”
Sound familiar?
It’s fear speaking. It’s not the voice of Heaven—it’s the echo of hell trying to shake your foundation.

And here’s the warning: When someone speaks fear over your faith, no matter who they are—it’s not personal, it’s spiritual. And you don’t argue with it. You flee from it.
Even Jesus distanced Himself from unbelief:
“He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.” — Matthew 13:58
“Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me…” — Matthew 16:23 (said to Peter, His own disciple)
Jesus didn’t play with friendly fire. He identified unbelief—even when it wore the face of a friend—and He shut it down. And you must too. Because when faith is fragile, fear is contagious.
If you’re standing for healing, deliverance, breakthrough—you can’t afford to let the fears of others pollute your stance. Their doubt is not your truth. Their fear is not your future.
You are not being harsh by setting boundaries. You are being obedient. You are not being rude by guarding your faith. You are being wise.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23
“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” — 1 Corinthians 15:33
So ask God boldly:
“Lord, protect me from the voices of unbelief. Guard me from the influence of fear—even if it comes through strangers, family, friends, or people I love. Let Your Word be louder. Stronger. Final. I put them in Your hands—and I stay grounded in your hands and your Word. Constrain anyone against my beliefs from getting in my way. In Jesus’ name.”
Let your faith offend their fear.
Let your stand for truth convict their compromise.
