How to Respond to Biblical Criticism with Grace and Love

Updated: May 8, 2023

Handling biblical criticism without taking offense can be a challenge, but it's essential for Christians to approach it with a spirit of grace and love. Criticism may come from friends, family members, or even strangers who do not share the same faith, or from fellow believers who have different interpretations of Scripture.

In any case, it's essential to remember that the Bible is a living and active book, and it can withstand scrutiny and questioning.

One approach to dealing with biblical criticism is to listen carefully to the critique and seek to understand the other person's perspective. It can be helpful to ask questions to clarify their points and to show that you respect their opinion.

Additionally, it can be beneficial to examine the criticism in light of Scripture. This means searching the Bible to see if there is any truth in the critique and considering if there are areas in which personal growth or change may be necessary. This approach can help Christians discern whether the criticism is valid and how it might inform their faith and understanding of Scripture.

For instance, if someone says, "I don't think the Bible is relevant to modern life. It's outdated and full of contradictions," Christians can respond with grace and love. Rather than reacting defensively, they can acknowledge the other person's opinion and express their own faith in Scripture. Christians can respond by saying, "I hear what you're saying, and I understand that you might feel that way. However, I believe that the Bible is still relevant today, and I've found it to be a source of wisdom and guidance in my life.

Could you share more about what you mean by contradictions, and maybe we can explore that together?" This kind of response can demonstrate respect for the other person's viewpoint while also affirming one's faith in the Bible.

When Christians respond to criticism with defensiveness, anger, and criticism in return, they risk turning people away from Jesus. For example, if a non-believer expresses their doubts or questions about the Bible, and a Christian responds with dismissiveness and hostility, the non-believer may feel alienated and turned off by Christianity altogether. Instead, if Christians approach criticism with humility, openness, and love, they can create a safe space for dialogue and potentially even open doors for evangelism. Ultimately, the way we handle criticism is a reflection of our faith in Jesus and our commitment to following His example of love and grace.

PRAYER:

Dear God,
Please help me to handle criticism with grace and love, and to respond in a way that reflects Your character. Help me to listen carefully to the critiques of others and seek to understand their perspective, even if I disagree with it. Please give me the strength to examine any criticism in light of Scripture, and to discern if there is any truth in it that I need to hear.
Lord, I know that being offended and defensive can turn people away from You, so I pray for the ability to remain unoffended and to respond in a way that honors You. Please help me to demonstrate Your love and humility in my interactions with others, even when it's difficult.
Thank You for Your wisdom and guidance, and for the example of Jesus, who faced criticism and rejection yet responded with love and grace. Please help me to follow His example and to become more like Him each day.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
