God Speaks & Creation Listens (6/12) God Commands Sea Creatures, Hail, & Snow
Psalm 148:7-8 - "Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do His bidding."
Psalm 148:7-8 beautifully illustrates that all of creation is invited—and even commanded—to praise the Lord. This passage speaks not only to the visible elements of creation but also to the unseen, emphasizing God's sovereignty over everything, from the depths of the oceans to the vast expanse of the skies.
"Praise the Lord from the earth..."
The psalmist begins by calling on the earth itself to join in praise. This is not limited to human voices but extends to all creatures and elements that make up the natural world. The great sea creatures represent the mystery and majesty of God's creation, including those living in the unfathomable depths of the ocean, where light does not reach, and humanity has yet to explore fully.
"...you great sea creatures and all ocean depths..."
Even the mighty and mysterious sea creatures, from whales to the tiniest organisms that inhabit the ocean depths, are called to honor God. Their existence, movements, and even their silence reflect God's creative power. This line challenges us to recognize that all creation, whether observed or hidden, is intricately connected in its purpose to glorify the Creator.
"...lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding."
Here, the focus shifts to the forces of nature, showing how they are not random but act in obedience to God's will. Storms, snow, lightning, and wind are all part of the symphony of creation that responds to the Creator's commands.
This paints a picture of God's absolute authority and highlights the harmony between God and the natural world, even when it appears chaotic to us.
It's a humbling thought—if the sea creatures and stormy winds praise God by fulfilling their created purpose, how much more should we, as His image-bearers, live in obedience and worship?
Psalm 148 invites us to reflect on the vastness of God’s dominion and His intimate connection to all He has made. It challenges us to see the world around us not as a mere backdrop to human life but as an active participant in glorifying God. This perspective transforms our view of creation, inspiring awe and reverence for the One who speaks, and all of creation listens.
If sea creatures we've never seen or named—living in depths we can't reach—faithfully do God's bidding without question, what makes us think the God who commands the ocean can't handle the waves in our lives? After all, we’re made in His image! It's like Psalm 148:7-8 says:
'Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths... stormy winds that do His bidding.'
Everything obeys Him, even the wildest storms and the most mysterious creatures!
So, sit back and breathe. If God's got the leviathans covered (Psalm 104:26) and counts every star (Psalm 147:4), don’t you think He’s got you too? Matthew 6:26 reminds us, 'Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?'"
Let the sea creatures in their obedience inspire you to trust God’s provision. He’s got your storms, your cares, and even your deepest depths in His hands. After all, the Creator of the universe is also the Keeper of your heart. So why not let go of the reins and relax into His perfect care?
