God Speaks & Creation Listens (4/12)-The Day the Sun Stood Still When God Stopped Time

The story in Joshua 10:8-14 is one of the most remarkable accounts of God’s intervention in human history.C Before the battle began, God had assured Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to stand against you” (Joshua 10:8). Bolstered by this promise, Joshua and his army marched all night from Gilgal to Gibeon, launching a surprise attack.

As the battle raged, God actively fought for Israel. He threw the enemy into confusion, enabling the Israelites to overpower them. While the Amorites fled, God sent large hailstones from the sky, killing more enemies than the Israelite soldiers did with their swords. But as the day wore on, Joshua saw that the battle was not yet complete. To achieve total victory, the Israelites needed more time before nightfall.

In a bold act of faith, Joshua prayed publicly, “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon” (Joshua 10:12). And then the unimaginable happened: “The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting for almost a full day” (Joshua 10:13). This miraculous event allowed the Israelites to fully defeat their enemies. Scripture emphasizes the significance of this moment, declaring, “There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord listened to a human being, because the Lord fought for Israel” (Joshua 10:14).

Here is the full account:

Joshua 10:8-14......The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to stand against you.”  So Joshua caught them by surprise, after marching all night from Gilgal.  The Lord threw them into confusion before Israel. He defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them through the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.  As they fled before Israel, the Lord threw large hailstones on them from the sky along the descent of Beth-horon all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died from the hail than the Israelites killed with the sword. On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”And the sun stood still and the moon stopped until the nation took vengeance on its enemies.

So the sun stopped in the middle of the skyand delayed its setting for almost a full day.

There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord listened to a man, because the Lord fought for Israel.

In a moment of bold faith, Joshua prayed in full view of Israel: “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” And then the impossible happened. The Bible says, “The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!” (Joshua 10:13-14).

This moment was not about astronomy or celestial mechanics—it was about God’s promise and faithfulness. By extending the day, God ensured the complete victory of His people over their enemies, demonstrating that His power is not limited by time or the laws of nature. It wasn’t just a military strategy; it was a divine declaration: God fights for His people, and His purposes will not be thwarted.

While we may not see the sun and moon literally stand still, this story reminds us that God is not bound by human limitations. He controls time, space, and circumstances. When we face battles in life—be they spiritual, emotional, or physical—we can trust that the same God who fought for Joshua is fighting for us. He can stop time, move mountains, or open doors to fulfill His promises.

Science has uncovered evidence that there has been a day when time seemed to stand still—a phenomenon that aligns intriguingly with the biblical account in Joshua 10:12-13.
