"Don't Be Fooled: The Bible Teaches Us to Judge Ourselves and Others, but in the Right Way"

Updated: May 3, 2023

There is a common misconception in our society that judging others is wrong or that we have no right to do so. However, this belief is not entirely accurate when we look at what the Bible has to say about it. Scripture teaches us that we are to judge ourselves and others but in the right way. This is not a call to be self-righteous or judgmental but rather a reminder to hold ourselves accountable and to help others do the same.

One of the most well-known scriptures on this topic is Matthew 7:1-5, which says, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

This passage is often misunderstood to mean that we should not judge at all, but Jesus is teaching us to judge in the right way. We must first examine ourselves and take care of any issues or sins in our own lives before we can help others. It's essential to approach others with humility and grace, recognizing that we are all sinners in need of God's mercy and forgiveness.

In addition, 1 Corinthians 5:12-13 says, "What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. 'Expel the wicked person from among you.'" This passage shows us that it's not wrong to judge others, but we must do so with the right motives and for the right reasons. We are called to hold our fellow believers accountable and to maintain the purity and integrity of the church.

However, when we judge others, we must be careful not to do so hypocritically or self-righteously. Romans 2:1 says, "You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things." We must always examine ourselves and approach others with humility and grace, recognizing that we are all sinners in need of God's mercy and forgiveness.

The Bible does teach us to judge ourselves and others but in the right way. We are called to hold ourselves accountable and to help others do the same. However, we must approach others with

humility and grace, recognizing that we are all sinners in need of God's mercy and forgiveness. When we judge others, we must do so with the right motives and for the right reasons, seeking to maintain the purity and integrity of the church. Ultimately, we must trust in God's wisdom and discernment as we navigate our relationships with others.
