In Job 33:14-18, Elihu, one of Job's friends, describes how God, in His mercy and grace, attempts to communicate with humans in various ways. Elihu explains that even when humans fail to recognize God's voice, He persists in reaching out. Here is the passage:

"For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword." (Job 33:14-18)

This passage highlights God's relentless effort to guide and protect His children. Elihu describes how, after trying to converse with man multiple times without success, God chooses to speak to him in a dream or vision during deep sleep. At that time, God opens the man's ears and seals instruction within them. To seal something means to ensure that it is secure and protected, confirming its authenticity and making sure it is followed.

The act of sealing the instruction suggests that God gives clear and decisive guidance that the person will follow, even if they are not consciously aware of it. This sealing implies a firm and unalterable directive from God.

In biblical terms, to seal something can mean to establish it with authority and finality, as seen in other scriptures:

Daniel 12:9 (NIV): "He replied, 'Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end.'"

Here, sealing indicates preserving and securing God's message until the appointed time.

God's intention in sealing this instruction is to withdraw the man from his own purposes, which are leading him astray. This divine intervention protects the individual from pride and potentially disastrous consequences. God's intervention aims to save the person's soul from the pit and their life from the sword, illustrating His deep love and desire to protect His children.

Proverbs 16:18 (NIV): "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."

Out of His love and protection for us, God may visit us in our dreams without our awareness, demonstrating His constant presence and care. Scripture assures us that God promises never to leave or forsake us, remaining steadfast even when we may not recognize His actions. His commitment to His children is unwavering, always seeking ways to reach us despite our stubbornness.

Deuteronomy 31:8 - And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Ears, symbolically, represent the ability to hear and understand God's word. Throughout scripture, ears are associated with spiritual receptivity and obedience:

Matthew 11:15 (NIV): "Whoever has ears, let them hear."

This frequently used phrase by Jesus emphasizes the importance of spiritual hearing and understanding. It's more than just a physical act of hearing; it's about a receptive heart and mind.

Jesus is calling for a spiritual awakening, a capacity to perceive the deeper meaning behind His words. It's about understanding the Kingdom of God on a level beyond the physical senses. It's not enough to merely listen; true hearing involves applying God's word to one's life.

By saying "Whoever has ears, let them hear," Jesus implies that His audience was missing something crucial. He was inviting them to open their spiritual ears to the profound truths He was revealing.

As children of God, we often seek dreams and visions for direction. Some of us beg for it. Elihu's insight suggests that God may already be speaking to us through these means, even if we are unaware. A sealed instruction from God might manifest as a sudden change of heart or a redirection without us knowing why. Have you ever experienced being firmly set on a path only to find that you no longer have peace about it?

This could be a sign that God visited you in a dream, sealed His instruction, and redirected your course.

An exit sign- change direction warning

Think back to times when your heart or path unexpectedly shifted. These moments could have been God's loving intervention, steering you away from harm and towards His higher plan for your life. Trust in God's wisdom—he communicates with you even when you don't realize it—and rest assured that He is continually working to safeguard and lead you.

Perhaps you feel that God isn't speaking to you through dreams or visions, as many hope for. According to this chapter, it's possible that you are indeed spiritually hearing God's direction and following it, even though the enemy may try to convince you otherwise.

A season without dreams doesn't mean you aren't hearing from God; it could mean that God is sealing your instructions, or that your growth in Christ has advanced beyond needing dreams and visions for guidance.

Remember,

the devil is always a liar,

and the kingdom of darkness can send spiritual attacks

aimed at undermining your faith

to steer you in another direction-

a direction that serves their purpose,

not Gods.

If you find yourself praying earnestly for loved ones—whether family, sons, daughters—and feel as though God isn't responding, remember this: if you are saved and living in righteousness, God hears your prayers and is actively working on behalf of those you intercede for. Scripture assures us of this truth, for 'The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective' (James 5:16, NIV).

In the book of Job, we see how God employs various strategies to guide us away from destruction. You can incorporate this understanding into your prayers. Here's an example:

'Father God,

I come to you in the name of Jesus, giving you praise, honor, and glory in my life. I lift up [mention names] to you. I ask that you speak to them in their dreams, during their deep sleep, and seal instructions that will steer them away from destruction and pride. Your mercy and grace, as demonstrated in Job, show your desire to communicate with us in countless ways.

I trust in your word and faithfulness to reach [names], guiding them away from the enemy's schemes and leading them to salvation.

To your glory, thank you, Elohim! Amen.

(Be sure to include yourself for your own personal struggles)
