The concept of mediums, spiritual communication, and deliverance from spirits has a deep-rooted history, documented in biblical narratives. From the Old Testament account of the witch of Endor to the New Testament story of the slave girl with a spirit of divination, these narratives shed light on the ancient struggle between spiritual forces and human endeavors. This article delves into these biblical stories of deliverance, drawing parallels to modern practices and mediums in today's culture. By examining these accounts, we can gain insights into the complexities of spiritual warfare and the ongoing relevance of discernment in navigating the spiritual landscape.
The Witch of Endor:
In 1 Samuel 28, the Bible recounts the story of King Saul seeking guidance before a battle by consulting a medium, the witch of Endor. The narrative unfolds in the town of Endor, located in the northern part of ancient Israel. Saul, desperate for insights, disregarded God's prohibitions against consulting mediums, leading him to seek counsel from the forbidden source.
1 Samuel 28:7-20 (NKJV): "So Saul said to his servants, 'Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.' And his servants said to him, 'In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.'
So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him; and they came to the woman by night. And he said, 'Please conduct a séance for me, and bring up for me the one I shall name to you.'
Then the woman said to him, 'Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?'
And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, 'As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.'
Then the woman said, 'Whom shall I bring up for you?' And he said, 'Bring up Samuel for me.'
When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, 'Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!'
And the king said to her, 'Do not be afraid. What did you see?' And the woman said to Saul, 'I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth.'
So he said to her, 'What is his form?' And she said, 'An old man is coming up, and he is covered with a mantle.' And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed down.
Now Samuel said to Saul, 'Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?' And Saul answered, 'I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do.'
Then Samuel said: 'So why do you ask me, seeing the Lord has departed from you and has become your enemy? And the Lord has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day. Moreover, the Lord will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.'
Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, and was dreadfully afraid because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no food all day or all night."

Saul's disobedience in consulting a medium ultimately led to his downfall, illustrating the importance of following God's commands and the consequences of seeking guidance from forbidden sources.
Despite the disobedient act, God allowed Samuel's spirit to appear and deliver a message of impending doom. This underscores the divine authority over even seemingly dark and forbidden practices.
Saul's disobedience, including his failure to wait for the prophet Samuel before offering sacrifices and his decision to consult a medium in violation of God's explicit command, marked a turning point. God rejected Saul as king, and the Spirit of the Lord departed from him, signifying a significant rupture in his relationship with God (1 Samuel 15:10-23; 1 Samuel 28:16-19).

In another biblical incident, a young girl possessed a spirit of divination, and her fortune-telling abilities were linked to a spiritual influence of which was demonic. The Apostle Paul, discerning the origin of this supernatural capability, commanded the spirit to leave her, and it departed immediately.
Acts 16:16-18: "Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us and cried out, saying, 'These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.' And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, 'I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.' And he came out that very hour."
Unlike King Saul, who lost the Spirit of God and was ultimately rejected by Him, the slave girl's encounter with Jesus took a dramatically different turn. While King Saul deliberately sought out a medium instead of seeking guidance from God, the specifics of how the slave girl came to be possessed by a demonic spirit are not provided in the biblical account. However, what is clear is that upon her deliverance by the Apostle Paul, her life took a transformative turn.
Contrary to facing condemnation or rejection, the slave girl experienced deliverance and freedom. This turn of events, however, greatly displeased her owners, who had profited significantly from her ability to predict the future. This transformation is illustrated in Acts 16:16-18, emphasizing the powerful impact of spiritual deliverance and the subsequent consequences it brought upon those who had exploited her gifts and enslaved her, exploiting her for money.
Outside of spiritual liberation, we do not hear about the slave girl again, or her masters.
The story of the witch of Endor serves as a cautionary tale about seeking guidance from forbidden sources. As we navigate the complexities of modern culture, it's essential to discern potential mediums that may impact our spiritual well-being. The comparison between biblical examples and contemporary practices underscores the enduring relevance of seeking divine guidance and avoiding avenues that may compromise spiritual integrity.
The story of the slave girl, depicted in Acts 16:16-18, offers hope and promises to those entangled in the occult practices of witchcraft, wizardry, and spiritual bondage. It serves as a testament to the transformative power of divine intervention and deliverance. Through the encounter with the Apostle Paul, the slave girl is liberated from the grip of a demonic spirit that enabled her to predict the future. This narrative highlights the possibility of redemption and freedom for individuals ensnared by spiritual darkness, offering a beacon of hope amidst the shadows of occult practices and satanism.
Leviticus 19:31 (NIV): "Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God."
This command is part of the broader set of laws given to the Israelites, emphasizing the importance of relying on God for guidance and avoiding practices associated with divination, mediums, and spiritists.
Heavenly Father,
I come before you with a heart burdened by the weight of my mistakes and choices. I acknowledge that I have fallen short, and I am in need of your mercy and grace. I long to be set free from the chains that bind me and to experience the forgiveness that only You can offer.
Lord Jesus, I believe in your sacrifice on the cross and the redemption it brings. I surrender my sins, my burdens, and my past to You. I ask for your forgiveness and the cleansing power of your blood to wash over me. Set me free from the consequences of my actions and the guilt that haunts me.
I also pray for the strength to walk in the light of your truth, to resist the temptations that led me astray, and to live a life that honors and glorifies You.
Holy Spirit, come and dwell within me. Empower me to live according to your will, guiding me away from the paths of darkness and towards the light of your love and righteousness.
I trust in your promise that if we confess our sins, you are faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Thank you for your boundless love and the freedom that comes through your forgiveness.
In Jesus' name, I pray.
Amen.
