"Conquering High Places: Overcoming Modern-Day Idolatry and Pursuing God Above All Else"
Updated: May 3, 2023
In the Bible, "high places" refers to places of worship that are elevated, often on hilltops or mountains. These places were commonly used for pagan worship, where people would offer sacrifices and engage in other forms of idolatry.
Today, high places in the spiritual realm can refer to anything that takes a place of prominence or priority in our lives, often to the point of becoming an idol. This can include material possessions, relationships, careers, or even our own egos. Identifying high places in our lives requires honest self-reflection and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
We can start by examining where we invest our time, money, and energy. Are there areas where we are excessively focused or driven, to the point of neglecting other important aspects of our lives? Are there habits or patterns of behavior that we know are unhealthy or unproductive, yet we continue to engage in them?
Scripture offers guidance on how to overcome high places in our lives. In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul encourages us to "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." This means that we must be intentional about examining our thought patterns and attitudes, and aligning them with the truth of God's Word. In addition, Colossians 3:2 instructs us to "set our minds on things above, not on earthly things."
This means that we must prioritize our relationship with God above all else, seeking to grow in our knowledge and understanding of Him through prayer, Bible study, and fellowship with other believers.
Examples of high places in our modern society include social media, entertainment, material possessions, and even our own pride and ego. These things can easily take a place of prominence in our lives, drawing our focus away from God and hindering our spiritual growth.
Overcoming high places requires a willingness to surrender our desires and priorities to God, and to seek His guidance and direction in all areas of our lives. As we grow in our relationship with Him, we can trust that He will help us to identify and overcome any obstacles that may be hindering our spiritual growth and well-being.
PRAY THIS:
Dear Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, I humbly ask that you remove every high place that may exist in my mind and soul. Anything that I have unconsciously erected as a monument in rebellion against You, I now reject and renounce in the name of Jesus. I surrender myself completely and unreservedly to Your Holy Spirit and to Your Kingdom. I thank You, Lord, for Your loving-kindness and the power of Your grace. Amen.
