"Beyond the Surface: The Biblical View of Beauty and the Dangers of Cosmetic Surgery"

Updated: May 3, 2023

The Bible teaches us that beauty is not just skin deep, but rather it is found within a person's heart and character. In 1 Peter 3:3-4, we read, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."

While it is not wrong to take care of our physical appearance, we should not place too much emphasis on it, as it can lead to a superficial and prideful attitude.

Moreover, cosmetic surgery should not be viewed as a goal or a way to achieve beauty, as it can have severe consequences and lead to regret.

Numerous stories of plastic surgeries gone wrong serve as a cautionary tale for those considering such procedures.

For instance, the story of Heidi Montag, a former reality TV star who underwent multiple surgeries in a single day, including breast augmentation, liposuction, and a nose job, has been widely publicized. Montag experienced severe complications and pain as a result of

the surgeries, and later expressed regret for her decision.

Similarly, the story of Hang Mioku, a South Korean woman who became addicted to

plastic surgery and did resorted to injecting cooking oil into her face when doctors refused to perform more procedures, serves as a stark warning about the dangers of becoming obsessed with physical appearance.

As we read in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies."

Let us strive to focus on inner beauty and honor God with our bodies, rather than becoming obsessed with outward appearance and resorting to dangerous procedures in pursuit of a fleeting standard of beauty.
